[edit] What is Maya?

Maya is another 3D modeling and animation package created by the folks at Alias|Wavefront.

(insert other praise for Maya here - Thri)

[edit] Z-up vs. Y-up

Max's world coordinates is set up so the positive Z axis (+Z) is considered "up", while Maya has the positive Y axis (+Y) as up.

[edit] Modeling

As with 3D Studio Max, you have to model in polygons in Maya to have NWN understand its format. Meaning no SubDivisions, NURBS, Shaders or other fancy stuff. Also, always delete the object history when you're done. When using PolyTrans or Deep Exploration to convert to a Max format, remember to go to the objects in Max and make sure the object modifier is an Editable Mesh, sometimes it will get converted to an Editable Poly which NWMax will skip over.

[edit] Animating

OK, now we get into the REALLY tricky part. Remember that +Y vs +Z axis thing before? For modeling it's not such a problem, as you just rotate the group around and you're set.

Animations on the otherhand, end up making the creature look like he's moving in reverse.
